What the game doesn’t explain
The tutorial and the chalkboards cover the basics, but a lot of the game is learned by losing. A few examples of what you only find out by playing:
- Sound wraps around walls. Since version 0.4, sound doesn’t pass through everything. In a room with one entrance, every sound seems to come through the door.
- Darkness hides you. Standing on a cell that is as dark as possible makes you invisible to other characters.
- Baldi pauses to praise you. After you complete an activity, Baldi stops for a moment, and bumping into him then doesn’t cost you a life.
- Rule breaks have a delay. The Principal only reacts if he sees a rule broken for a short moment, and each rule has its own timing.
- Detention has a cap. Detentions grow longer with every catch, but they stop growing at a fixed maximum.
The Hidden Mechanics guide covers these and more in detail.
Seeds
Every level is generated from a seed, a number that decides the layout. The Hide & Seek menu has a field for entering one, and in Endless mode you can click a high score to replay its seed. Seeds are useful for practice and for sharing a run with friends, but they don’t decide everything: since version 0.10, items and their locations change every time a level loads. Our Seeds guide explains what a seed controls and what it doesn’t.
Secrets in development
Baldi’s Basics Plus is still in Early Access, and the developer has said openly that the full release will add much more. According to the game’s Steam page, the full version is planned to have more polish, secrets and story elements, and secret levels are listed among the features still to come. The August 2026 status update says that work on the secret content for 1.0 is under way.
The story is planned to stay in the background, with gameplay as the priority. That fits what the game already does: it starts as a parody of cheap 90s educational software and slowly suggests that something more is going on, without stopping to explain itself.
A secret that has expired
Not every secret lasts. Players who dug through the code of version 0.7 found a date-based secret tied to the file name NINENINE, which only worked on September 9, 2024. The check in the code was locked to that exact day and year, so it can’t be triggered on a normal copy of the current version. It is a good example of why rumors about secrets should be checked against the version you are playing.
Many “secret codes” shared online come from fan games and mods, not from Baldi’s Basics Plus itself. If a trick asks you to install something or edit game files, it is not part of the game.
Test mechanics safely
The best way to learn a hidden mechanic is to try it without risk. The Explorer play style is made for this: Baldi counts down and then disappears, so you can walk the school, test how characters react and see how sound travels without losing a life. Pair it with a seed you know, and you can repeat the same layout until a trick becomes second nature.
How we check what we publish
Secrets attract rumors, so this section follows a simple rule: we only describe what is confirmed by the official changelogs, the Steam page or the game itself, and we say which version a mechanic applies to. When an update changes a mechanic, the guide is updated too. The current version at the time of writing is 0.14.5.
