Beans
Beans has a neat trick to show you: a wad of pink bubble gum, spat straight down the hallway. Whoever it hits slows to a crawl for several seconds, and that can be the moment Baldi catches up. The good news is that Beans doesn’t care who he hits. Here is how his gum works in Baldi’s Basics Plus and how to stay out of its way, or use it.
How he behaves
Beans spits gum at anyone who enters his line of sight, mostly in hallways. The wad flies straight and fast, and it passes through doors, swinging doors and even the portal of a Portal Poster. After it hits something, Beans runs away from his gum.
He talks a lot, which helps. Taunts like “Say, who’s lookin’ to see a neat trick?”, warnings like “Heads up!” and his apologetic “Sorry in advance!” tell you he is nearby and about to spit.
What the gum does
| Effect | Details |
|---|---|
| Slowdown | Movement is drastically reduced for about 10 seconds |
| Covered inventory | The gum covers your inventory, making it hard to see which item is selected |
| Vulnerability | While slowed, you are easy prey for Baldi, Playtime and the Principal |
| Copies status effects | Since version 0.12, the gum carries any status effects Beans has when he spits it |
Techno Boots don’t help here. The gum is a slowdown, not a push, so you have to cut it off or wait it out.
Who the gum affects
The gum sticks to everyone who walks into it, not only you. That is the key to dealing with Beans.
| Character | Affected? |
|---|---|
| You | Yes |
| Baldi | Yes, he is slowed down too |
| Principal of the Thing | Yes |
| 1st Prize | Slowed, then often rushes at you and crashes when he breaks free |
| Cloudy Copter | His movement is affected, even though the gum doesn’t visibly stick |
| It’s a Bully | No, he is immune |
| Chalkles | No, he is immune |
How to avoid the gum
- Listen for his lines. “Heads up!” is your cue to get out of the line of fire.
- Don’t walk down the middle. Shots aimed straight down a hallway can miss you if you are slightly off center.
- Break line of sight. He only spits at what he sees. Step into a room or around a corner.
- Wear the Faculty Nametag. Beans is one of the characters it affects.
Getting gum off
Safety Scissors cut the gum off at once and restore your normal speed. Since version 0.4, one pair cuts several effects at the same time, so if Playtime has you in a game of jump rope while you are gummed, a single use deals with both. Without scissors, the gum wears off on its own after about ten seconds. If nobody is chasing you, waiting is often the cheaper option. Our Safety Scissors guide explains when to spend them.
Turning Beans against Baldi
Because the gum slows Baldi just as much as it slows you, Beans can buy you time. If Baldi is chasing you down a hallway where Beans is spitting, the gum may hit Baldi first. You can’t aim Beans, but you can choose your route: leading a chase past Beans is a gamble that often pays off, especially if you are slightly off center and he is in the middle.
The same works on the Principal. A gummed Principal is a slow Principal, which gives you a window to break line of sight after a rule break.
Beans and the other characters
- 1st Prize. Gum slows him, but he tends to rush at you as soon as he breaks free.
- Arts and Crafters. If Beans spits while Arts and Crafters is charging you, the gum vanishes without hitting anything.
- Mrs. Pomp. Beans is one of the characters that can slow you on your way to her class.
- BSODA. Beans can pass through a BSODA spray, much like Baldi.
Beans in development
Beans is new in Plus and doesn’t appear in Baldi’s Basics Classic. Over the updates he has been toned down in a few ways: his gum slows you less than it did in the earliest versions, his voice lines were made quieter twice, in versions 0.5 and 0.10, and his spitting animation was fixed in version 0.14.
